Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, in Northumberland, welcomes back Brass Band Sunday this September. And this Sunday the English Heritage property near Morpeth will play host to the first of five special Bands at Belsay events, featuring the award winning Ellington Colliery Band.

Visitors to Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Northumberland can enjoy a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Rhododendron Garden this Thursday and again in July with head gardener Jo Harrigan. The garden is beautiful at this time of year and lots of work has been done to restore and conserve the Rhododendron Garden and take care of the many plant species and wildlife at Belsay.
I was lucky enough to be lady of the manor for an evening when I stayed overnight at Belsay Hall in Northumberland last night. It was the property’s first ever family-friendly sleepover event at the historic Northumberland estate. The sleepover was part of Museums at Night – an annual after-hours celebration when hundreds of museums, galleries, libraries, archives and heritage sites across the UK open their doors for special evening events.
Enjoy a focus on Victorian era sporting fashion at Belsay hall this weekend. As part of Belsay Hall’s spectacular month-long Fashion from the Past event, visitors are invited to enjoy the sporting fashion in vogue more than a century ago. There’ll be a focus on all kinds of sporting clothing, with particular focus on women’s sporting pursuits, including swimming, cycling, horse riding, croquet and tennis.
English Heritage’s Belsay Estate still has places left at its first-ever sleep-over. The event, taking place on Saturday evening, is part of Museums at Night and will give participants a chance to stay in the fascinating building and experience an overnight say, stories and food at this Northumberland property. The experience will also include a tour of the old castle and some ghostly story telling.
Fans of the history of fashion and those fascinated with the story of the Titanic are in for a treat this weekend when English Heritage property Belsay shows some of the clothes worn by Edwardian ladies on board the Titanic. Available for viewing will be the creations brought on board by its most prestigious passengers and details about the life and legacy of one of its most famous survivors, fashion designer, Lady Lucy Duff-Gordon. See costumes worn by first-class ladies and the more utilitarian clothes worn by third-class passengers.
Belsay Hall Castle and Gardens will hold a Fashion from the Past exhibition in May, and it promises to be both entertaining and informative. The English Heritage property will feature many displays and presentations, including a commemorative display and presentation marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Visitors will get to see Edwardian fashion, documents and survivor testimonies detailing live on board the great ship. Fashion from the past will also feature fashion and rations – fashion of the 1940s – and Tudor and Georgian costume displays.
The North of England and the Scottish Borders will see a great variety of activities and events this half-term. If you are in spendthrift mode, then we have good news for you. National Trust properties Wallington Morpeth and Cragside will be open at no charge during the half-term break.

The Middleton Room at Belsay Hall near Morpeth will be transformed into a place where men and children can take refuge. This will happen as the hall’s annual Festive Gift Fair returns on November 5-6. Shoppers have long been able to leave their children in temporary crèches while they continue perusing the aisles, and now women can leave the retail-weary men in their lives in a safe place while they go off and shop to their hearts content. English Heritage will this weekend be opening its own special male-inspired chill out area at Belsay Hall complete with football games, newspapers, magazines, DVD’s and sofas.
Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens will be hosting its annual Christmas Festive Gift Fair on November 5 and 6. The event will offer a variety of specialist crafts and unique gifts on sale.
