The Olympic Torch made its way south through Tyne and Wear today and Matt Reilly shared with us some photos of the torch on its journey through Gateshead where thousands of people lined the route to cheer on the torchbearers. Bamburgh in Northumberland will play host to the London 2012 Olympic torch and will also allow visitors to view the UK’s largest private collection of Olympic torches. The 2012 Olympic Torch arrives in the village on June 14, as part of the UK-wide torch relay. People will also be able to see the Torches of Inspiration collection of 14 Olympic torches, dating back to the first modern torch relay at the 1936 Berlin Games.

Bamburgh Castle reports a one per-cent increase in the number of visitors travelling to the attraction by bus. More and more visitors to Northumberland chose to leave their cars behind and travel by bus in 2011. As well, more people who live in the county are using the local bus to travel around, especially to tourist attractions.
