Amble boatyard’s Olympic creation for the Tyne
The Amble Boat Company has produced an amazing piece of artwork that both produces music and floats on water. The Northumberland firm says that its enthusiasm meant it was able to secure the contract to create the artwork called FLOW. It has been commissioned to celebrate the Cultural Olympiad 2012. FLOW is described as a tide mill. It contains a waterwheel that takes its power from the River Tyne’s current to provide energy to move the mechanical musical instruments on FLOW.
Borders brewery drinks to success
The Scottish Borders Brewery is celebrating its first anniversary with the production of more than 240,000 pints of ale. The brewery is Scotland’s only plough-to-pint microbrewery. It supplies more than 200 outlets throughout Scotland and the North of England. It produces five real ales, including recent released Holy Cow.
Madonna’s gig could boost Borders tourism
A concert performance by Madonna this summer is expected to boost tourism in the Scottish Borders and Edinburgh. Set for July 21, the concert in Scotland’s capital is expected to bring an extra £55m into the local economy if people stay overnight and travel in the area. The concert is set to take place at Murrayfield.
An Experiencing Scotland project has led to an increase in turnover and sales per tourism visitor. The project is funded and delivered by Scottish Enterprise, which was created in late 2012 to boost tourism businesses and urge them to work with the food and drink sector to get more local foods into tourist venues.
Northumberland promotional footage gets screening
Promotional films made in the 1970s and designed to encourage people to relocate to Northumberland will be screened in Hexham at the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre in March.
North East England museums get grant for community work
Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums has received funds which will be spent according to public input. People living near one dozen museums in the North East will help decide how the £150,000 grand will be spent. The money is from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and will pay for new ways of working with near-by communities.
Old fashioned tradition says that on a Leap day in February normal order is changed, and so it is women rather than men who propose to their love. If you are ready to propose, English Heritage is encouraging you to do so at one of their properties in the North East of England, which should make the perfect setting for popping the question.
Cycle path will link Peebles, Cardrona, Innerleithen
A new cycle route will be created in the Scottish Borders. The path will connect Peebles, Cardrona and Innerleithen and is et to be launched in the start of 2013. Key growth points for tourism in Tweeddale and the Borders include mountain biking centres at Glentress and Innerleithen. Furthermore, Glentress is a designated pre-games training camp for the Olympics and it has been revealed that the European Downhill Cup will come to Innerleithen in June. So the new path is crucial to the region’s role in the future of cycling tourism in the Scottish Borders.

Digging deep for ancient ideas in the North Pennines
The Altogether Archaeology project of the last few years has been such a hit that it will proceed again this year. The project is led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Members of the public are asked to step forward and give ideas on which areas they would like to explore.
