As the original Lindisfarne Gospels goes on display at Palace Green in Durham, residents and visitors to museums and churches in Northumberland will have the opportunity to see a rare facsimile copy of this remarkable book as a special exhibition tours the county during the summer.
The copy is now on display at Woodhorn museum just outside Ashington until 14th July, except 22nd and 23rd June when it will move to St Cuthbert’s Church in Bedlington to feature in their Lindisfarne Gospels themed flower festival.
St Cuthbert’s Church in Elsdon will be the next stop for the book on the weekend of the 20th and 21st July again featuring as part of their flower festival.
It’s a village festival in Ponteland next when the copy will be on display at St Mary’s Church from 24th until 28th July before moving to Bailifgate Museum in Alnwick for the whole of the month of August.
On the 7th September the Gospels facsimile will arrive at Blyth St Cuthbert’s where it will be displayed as part of their festival which will run until 14th September and will include Heritage Open Day events.
The journey will end at the Church of St Cuthbert in Bellingham where it will be displayed as part of a Harvest Festival from the 21st – 22nd September.
The facsimile copy belongs to Northumberland County’s Local Studies Collection, and the tour has been arranged in conjunction with the Durham visit of the original Lindisfarne Gospels.
Visitors are welcome at all of the venues, but are advised to check for opening times.
