The Ship Inn at Low Newton and The Barrels in Berwick have both received a prestigious award for the first time ever.

The pubs have been given the Campaign for Real Ale’s North Northumberland Pub of the Year title jointly.

The Ship operates a microbrewery which it opened in March 2008 and is now brewing its 300th batch of beer. Both the Ship and the Barrels will now go in to the regional round of the awards to be in with a chance of taking the Tyneside and Northumberland accolade.

The John Bull in Alnwick came in joint second with the Pilot in Berwick while The Olde Ship in Seahouses came in third.

The pub of the year gong is voted for by Camra members.
