Newcastle Life Science Centre events November 2012

Bring your inner scientist out to play at Life! Explore hands-on exhibitions and activities, watch live demonstrations, see a  rolling programme of presentations in the planetarium and hop aboard the Motion Ride for a thrilling 4D experience! One science centre ticket price pays for a whole day of science fun.

November highlights include the opening if Skating@Life, the real ice outdoor rink and the 4D Motion Ride Santa adventure, Sleigh Ride.

Skating@Life  10 November ‘12– 24 February ’13

Now in its 12th year, Skating@Life is an integral part of NewcastleGateshead’s flourishing Winter Festival and offers skating sessions, lessons, parties and packages throughout its 15 week season. Special evening Rink and (4D Motion) Ride evening offer. See website for extended timetable and

Sleigh Ride 4D Motion Ride starts 10 November and runs through until 6 January. Santa has an unfortunate accident just before midnight on Christmas Eve, Blitzen the reindeer and Bobo the elf are drafted in to help deliver the presents.

(Dracula 4D Motion Ride finishes 9th November. Experience Kevin’s hazardous coffin journey through the catacombs of Dracula’s castle as he faces his own demons head on and valiantly tries to save his father from the vampire’s clutches.)

In the Dark  Science Theatre runs until 25 January


Laser light and shadow show. Discover that light travels in straight lines and how polarizing sunglasses create weird and wonderful effects. (Warning: strobe lighting)

Live Skies, Planetarium Saturday 3 November 4pm – presenter led look at the early winter sky.

Half Term Fun Spooky Science week 27 October to Sunday 4th November

Enjoy spine-tingling fun with slime workshops and new shows in the Science Theatre, planetarium and the 4D Motion Ride, Dracula. 

‘Allergies Autopsies and all that Jazz’  six week lecture series starts 8th November. 

A mini biomedicine series of lectures which lifts the lid on the world of bio medicine and covers Clinical Pathology, Immunology, Genetics, Blood, Toxicology and NeuroScience. £30, runs until 13 December. Bookings 0191 243 8223.  

FameLab UK 2013 17 November. Regional heat of annual nationwide competition to find to find scientists with the talent to communicate (age 21 and over). To register go, or to be part of the audience reserve a seat via Life website.

 Pre-School day 20 November with optional skating session. Extra activities like bubble disco, mini beast handling and Piccolo sing along sessions planned around Young Explorers Zone and permanent attractions with the Life Centre £5.50 per adult; accompanying children under 4 free. Half an hour skate option – extra charge £2 per adult.

Lecture: 21 November 6pm Professor Tim Birkhead – author of Bird Sense £2 payable on the door, reserve a seat via Do we underestimate our feathered friends? Professor Tim Birkhead from Sheffield University attempts to change the way we think about birds. Their sense of smell, touch and taste are much better than we might have given them credit for.  Did you know that some birds can detect distant rain for instance?

The Centre for Life is a pioneering science village based in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne where scientists, clinicians, educationalists and business people come together to promote advancement of the life sciences. Its mission is to inspire curiosity in science through an imaginative programme of exhibitions and events, to raise standards in science education for young people and to engage everyone in contemporary science issues, such as climate change and stem cell technology.
