Two new ales have been launched in Northumberland.

They are the Hotspur Scotch Ale and Alnwick Fair Comment – and were unveiled to lots of praise by hoteliers, brewery chiefs and landlords at the Grey’s Inn at Embleton last Friday.

They have been launched by Spirit of Northumberland, which also produces Alnwick Rum.

Hotspur Scotch has been created on the basis of an old Edinburgh recipe, first used by the original Alnwick Brewery in the form of Hotspur Export. It is roasted barley, giving colour and a roasted taste, Maris Otter pale malt, crystal malt and traditional English hops.

Meanwhile, Alnwick Fair Comment is a blonde ale. Spirit of Northumberland is set to release a third beer, Malcolm’s Cross Mild, to tie in with the Campaign for Real Ale’s Mild Month in May.
