Kielder osprey chick flies for the first time in Northumbrian skies

A Kielder osprey chick born this year in Kielder Water & Forest Park in Northumberland has made its maiden flight! The bird is one of three rare ospreys born at Kielder this year. The healthy youngster – dubbed by locals Olympia – was first seen being airborne following a few days of stretching her wings. She even took quick hops on the tree top nest erected by the Forestry Commission before actually flying Volunteers at the Kielder Osprey Watch say she looked good in the air with just the odd clumsy landing. Mum and Dad continue to supply the young Kielder osprey with fish from Kielder Water. However, she tucked into a meal on her own. Very soon, she will be taught to hunt for herself.
