Thanks to an overwhelming 4,000 votes in the Energyshare national poll result Hexham River Hydro romped home just before Christmas to win the top prize of £100,000 against stiff competition up and down the country.
The scheme is supported by British Gas and River Cottage and a public vote determined the final outcome.Bob Hull, Chair of Hexham Community Partnership says: “It is good to know that Hexham River Hydro received an overwhelming vote of confidence. We’ve had many messages of support and some challenges too. We welcome all of these. Thanks to our success the funding will help us complete detailed feasibility work over the next 12 months. This will include important hydrological analysis and ecological monitoring to finally shape the project and take it on to planning application stage.”
Gillian Orrell from Transition Tynedale, who heroically plunged into the River Tyne at Hexham to draw attention to the project during the final stages of voting added: “We are keen that Hexham River Hydro works well for everybody and helps to bring a renewable future for Hexham and the wider region a step closer. We are planning to host a series of Open Forums during the year to report on progress and ensure that everyone ‘s views continue to be heard and acted upon. Full details will be available shortly on the Hexham Community website.”
Finally, Hexham River Hydro welcomes all volunteers and if you feel you can spare some time please do not hesitate to contact us.
