Heritage Open Days in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear – Sept 6 – 9

Interested in the history of the North East and old buildings? Then you’ll be happy to hear that 100s of old buildings of historical significance will be open, free of charge, as part of Heritage Open Days 2012. Heritage Open Days, which is in its 8th year, is a national event aimed at celebrating England’s heritage, history and culture and is taking place from Thursday September 6 – 9. Across Tyne and Wear and in Northumberland there are 100s of buildings you can see and places to visit, which will include events and walks. These including Newcastle’s Swing Bridge Motor Room, the Tynemouth Pier Lighthouse, the Winding House at Woodhorn, Berwick Watchtower and the Aln Valley Railway. Heritage Open Days, which is in its 8th year, is a national event aimed at celebrating England’s heritage, history and culture and is taking place from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 September.

This is a rare opportunity for residents and visitors of all ages to see some of the county’s hidden heritage treasures.

The event is not just aimed at heritage enthusiasts. Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event. Visitor numbers reached 1.7 million visitors at last year’s open days, which was an all-time high. This year it is anticipated that the event will be just as successful.

Locally, Heritage Open Days is being co-ordinated by local authorities, including Northumberland County Council, Newcastle City Council, North Tyneside Council, South Tyneside Council, Sunderland City Council, and Gateshead Council. The national scheme is being run by the National Trust, Civic Voice, the Heritage Alliance and supported by English Heritage.

Heritage Open Days is possible thanks to the help of a great many enthusiastic volunteers and community groups.
