Runners at the start of the 2011 Haltwhistle Challenge

The 26-mile Haltwhistle Challenge is set for 8am, May 19, 2012, with walkers challenged to finish the route in less than 11 hours.

Runners begin slightly later and will be hand-timed.  Whether your run or walk, this is one of the best walks in Northumberland and participants take in some of the best scenery in the North of England. The challenge starts at Haltwhistle and heads to the Burn before connecting up with the Hadrian’s Wall Trail at Cawfields Quarry.

The challenge route then does a loop around north of the wall and turns west to Greenhead. At this point participants will be able to have  a quick break, soup and drinks before continuing on to do the next 12 miles.

The final section is very tough as the challenge ascends Kellah Moor and crosses the Pennine Way. The hard slog is rewarded ith some breathtaking views!  The last bit of the route is somewhat easier as it traverses the South Tyne valley. Refreshments are provided in the school hall of the Haltwhistle Community Campus.

The route is self-guided and there are regular checkpoints and marshalls to help everyone find their way. Full details on www.haltwhistlewalkingfestival.org.
