National Trust places in North East England are pulling out all the stops this winter to serve up some of the tastiest locally produced Christmas treats in their tea rooms, cafés and restaurants.

In addition, a number of festive food events have been organised aimed at  inspiring your Christmas kitchen.

From Christmas banquets and cake decorating workshops to festive food and craft markets, there’s sure to be something to tantalise your taste buds.

Here is a run down of the Trust’s top food events this winter in the North East.


  • Christmas Lunch, November 30 – December 4, 7 – 11 and 14 – 18, 12pm – 2.30pm

Bring family and friends to enjoy a luxurious three course meal in the stables tearooms with mince pies to finish. Booking essential on 01669 622 040 for details; £25 per person.


  • Festive Food and Craft Market, December 3 and 17, 10am to 3pm

Treat yourself to tasty foods and exquisite crafts sold direct by local farmers and producers, and tuck into roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

  • ‘Winter Warmers’ Beer Garden, Pub and Late Night Shopping, every Friday night in November and December, 6pm -9pm (Friday December 2 – live music buskers’ night)

As the dark evenings draw in, relax with a mulled wine, tasty local real ale or indulgent hot chocolate in our cosy festive pub, or wrap up warm and brave the chill air with roaring fire braziers and atmospheric lighting in our family-friendly beer garden.   • ‘Winter Warmers’ Christmas Hogroast, December 16, 6pm-9pm

Wrap up warm and celebrate Christmas with something a little bit different at Gibside’s Friday night pub. Enjoy live music and succulent hog roast rolls, mulled wine, tasty local real ales or indulgent hot chocolates while keeping cosy in our festive pub or braving the chill air with fire braziers and atmospheric lighting in our family-friendly beer garden. Bring the kids for Christmassy face painting and a prize for the best dressed elf, fairy or mini Santa. Free entry!

Seaton Delaval Hall

  • Forgotten crafts: Make a Christmas Pudding, November 20, 12pm – 2pm

Make a traditional Christmas Pudding for your family and friends at this hands-on workshop. Bring a pinny!  This workshop will take place in the Activity Hut. All materials provided.  Children welcome. Booking Essential on 0191 237 9100;£10 per person.

Souter Lighthouse

  • A Taste of Christmas, December 3-4, 11am – 4pm

Try some traditional Christmas dishes from around the world with some carols thrown in for good measure. The tearoom will be serving traditional Christmas dishes from around the world as well as our well established favourites. Booking not needed, call 0191 529 0905 for details.
