Mary Coyle MBE is the new Chair of Northumberland Tourism’s Interim Board.
Mary has a rich and varied past. She worked for Nacro for 16 years and was responsible for developing and managing activities to save young people from crime. Then she was regional director of Common Purpose, a leadership development organisation, for 10 years.
She is a trustee of the Newcastle University staff pension plan, and a member of the International Advisory Board for Newcastle University Business School.
Ms Coyle is a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Tyne and Wear, and Vice-Chairwoman of NHS North of Tyne.
She has also been a trustee of many trusts and charities and is a founding trustee and director for Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums’ Development Trust.
She will assist Northumberland Tourism with the recruiting of the new board and chair. From Northern Ireland, she came to the North East of England in the mid 1970s after teaching.
She said: “I am delighted to be joining Northumberland Tourism at such an important stage in its development. The tourism industry is so important to Northumberland, providing more than one in 10 of the county’s jobs. I look forward to meeting the people who make Northumberland such a wonderful place to visit, and working with them to foster the growth we’re all looking for.”
In June she was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to leadership in the community.
